Anyone following the MLB draft?

Its weird how they did it this year.

They are ONLY having 5 rounds.

If you are NOT drafted in the 5 round draft then you can sign with an MLB team as early as this Sunday.

Here is the kicker. You CANNOT sign for more than 20k. Thats it.

You can see many kids go back to college for their senior year.

You can see many high school kids go to college

You can see many Juco kids go to a 4 year school.

Another problem is that there are lack of scholarships available.

From what i heard was that high school kids told clubs how much they would be willing to sign for. That way clubs know how much $$ they would have to spend as they dont want to waste a draft pick.

I wonder if MLB will make an exception next year that anyone who was draft eligible in 2020 can also be eligible in 2021?

Bucs got a steal grabbing the middle infielder from NMSU at #7

a kid from a town over from me expected to be drafted top 10 but fell to the Reds at 12. He's committed to Miss State so not sure if he's hopping straight to the Reds org or heading to college. The Pirates would have taken him if Gonzales wasn't sitting there at #7

It’s hard to think of too many collegiate prospects with better production than Nick Gonzales of New Mexico State. The second baseman should be one of the first players off the board come the MLB Draft, thanks in large part to his wild success at the plate. During his first season at New Mexico, Gonzales turned heads by posting a .347/.425/.596 slash line in 230 plate appearances. Doing that as a 19-year old is no easy task, and he proved it wasn’t a fluke.

As a sophomore, Gonzales posted an absurd .432/.532/.773 slash line in 284 plate appearances. He was still 1.3 years younger than the average NCAA player, so his ability to perform like a star despite being on the younger side drew attention across scouting circles. He added to his already impressive scouting profile by hitting .351/.451/.630 in 185 summer league plate appearances.

Somehow, Gonzales managed to be even better in 2020. During what would become his final collegiate season, the New Mexico State product posted an otherworldly .448/.610/1.155 slash line in 82 plate appearances. While these numbers may have gone down in a larger sample, there is no denying that he is among the best prospects in the 2020 MLB Draft.

That is typical for high school kids to let teams know what they expect. I had a player stay with me 2 years ago to play summer ball. He turned down a $900,000 signing bonus because he wanted $1.1 million coming out of high school. He went undrafted and then went to college for 3 years. He just got drafted early second round yesterday in a slot that normally pays about $1.7 million signing bonus. Made a good choice.

Here is the other problem. Anyone drafted in the first 5 rounds can only get a maximum $200,000 signing bonus this year. The rest of the signing bonus is deferred over 2 years. The owners are a greedy bunch. The limited signing bonus is a complete joke. These kids have to live off the bonus because minot league pay sucks. A ball players make about $1400 a month and AA players zoom up to about $1700 a month only paid during the season. Try living off that.

We had a local kid from our little league who was selected 103rd.

He was slotted at 565k and actually signed for 1.75M.

Kansas City had a great draft. Lacy is an absolute beast on the mound and then they came up with Loftin late 1st round. Both guys should have been off the board before KC picked. I think Baltimore and Miami reached a bit with Kjerstad and Meyer. I think I heard this was the first year where a high school player was not selected in the top 7.

Who knows with the baseball draft though
